Marine Life Identification.

The marine life featured on this site are all from the Andaman Sea around Phuket, Similan Islands and Burma's Mergui Archipelago. With some 1500 different species inhabiting the Indian Ocean we are fortunate enough to get a huge diversity of marine life on the east side.

Giant Manta - Manta birostris - Mobulidae - 670 cm

This gallery includes photo's of over 300 fish species each containing the common and scientific names. Scientific names are included as identification can be difficult since a species may have many common names. The common name is first, followed by two Latin words, the fist of which classifies the fish's genus (look the same/ have same ancestors) and second the species(same physical charateristics and reproduce). Finally at the end we have the scientific family name and largest measured size. Many fish have the ability to change colour so in some cases the same fish is displayed in it's various colour phases, in particular things like Frogfish and Nudibranch's, making them difficult to identify.

If you have an image and would like to submit it to the gallery then attach it to an email and send it to Spen I will ID it and post it up into the gallery.

To aid you in identifying your fish I have split the collection into a number of galleries.
